Teen Drug Abuse

Helping Kids Steering Their Teenage Years

Parents can help their children in abstruse situation in order to get cure from serious issues like violence, depression, and substance abuse. The work of both parents and their young ones is very important to solve such matters. The issue may be pacified with combine efforts of doers and their guardians.

In few cases, parents have to settle their own issues before offering any support to their young ones. When an elder family member is involved in drug or excessive alcohol use, it transforms children’s life into emotional shock. If parents use drugs and aggressive behavior, its consequences affect the personality of children even from the start.

Adolescent Substance Abuse

When children come in adolescent stage, they have tremendous contests at personal and social level. Some teenagers use unlawful drugs and other substance and considered this an essential part of their adolescence. Though many of the youth who use drugs don’t become drug abusers in adulthood and remain just users. Using of drug in teenage years is most harmful and dangerous. A little use of substance abuse (for example, alcohol, marijuana, and inhalants) in juvenile age has harmful negative results. Usually, all sources of social relations like institute, college, friends, and family relationship are affected by drug use.

Teen Drug Abuse and Treatment

When children come to adolescence, they have unclear goals of life and have to face different challenges in their life which make them vulnerable to fall into different kinds of drugs. Many of the teenagers use drugs in curiosity and to have fun in company of their friends rather than to use in daily routine. There are harmful consequences of this use of different kinds of drugs. If teens are not guided about drugs, they get injurious and dangerous results. Such negative effects leads to problems like bad performance in study, lack of interests and tense relationships with family or friends.

Using drug in adolescence can change behavior in every way, including their friends and activities. They start to become friends with those people who use drugs and encourage use of drugs. For adolescents, these changes signal serious consideration for parents, teachers, or friends to seek help for their loved one.

Marijuana Facts for Teens

Marijuana is a famous drug among youth because they didn’t consider it as dangerous and harmful. There is a misunderstanding about marijuana among teens. Teens usually use it because they think that it will be a source of relaxation and enjoyment among friends. Most of the teens are unaware about the risks attached with the use of marijuana. Teens may think that marijuana isn’t lethal because it’s not a “serious” drug like cocaine or heroin, but they do not know, it has its own set of dangers.

Marijuana is a “gateway drug” and this knowledge has been a point of discussion for many years. Though, it is a matter of fact that marijuana didn’t prove to be reason for addiction of other drugs but it has its own harmful results. Due to Marijuana, there are many short term and long term effects including anxiety, drop in IQ, cancer, and asthma. Some people consider it as harmless against the factual positions and it is essential to get support in case you or your beloved one is a user of marijuana.

When should you quit drugs? What’s the best time to quit? Almost every drug user’s soul search this question on multiple occasions in his/her life time. Let’s consider the origins of your current drug use, and then we will state some fairly harsh truths that need honest answers.

Take time out and think back to when you first tried an illegal substance. The circumstances and surroundings will differ depending on your location and surroundings at that time. For many millions of young people it is seen as a rite of passage. It is stepping up in life, being ‘grown up’ and it is undoubtedly both exciting and frightening at the same time. Back then the world of drugs will have been a mysterious one for the novice taking their first tentative steps through its ‘welcoming’ doors, but one thing is for sure; this initial introduction to drugs will not be forgotten by the almost all drug users.

There are many reasons. Curiosity and the relative ease of access are major factors. Then there is ‘peer pressure’. In Pakistani perspective, we are geographically located on the hub of narcotics, joblessness, free-floating anxiety and easy availability and cheaper price. Life can be tough during your teenage years and into early adulthood. Most young people want to fit in, to be associated with friends around their own age and if it happens that some of your more ‘influential’ peers are keen to sample illegal drugs then many are equally as keen to follow. You want to be part of the group or ‘gang’. Many youngsters feel that saying ‘No’ to sampling drugs is tantamount to becoming an outcast within that group.

Thankfully as you grow and mature you begin to discover your own inner strength and are able to make decision based on what you feel is correct, not because you wish to curry favor from others. Your decision not to continue experimentation with illegal substances, and to call time on your drug use before it has really begun is made for a strong reason. You understand that by following the drug route it will lead to many more potential problems than any ‘benefits’ you could ever hope to receive.

While a significant amount of young people experiment with some form of drug or another, many of these sensibly decide this is not something they wish to pursue. This decision will strengthen as their knowledge broadens on the devastating effects regular drug use can bring. Unfortunately there are also a good percentage of people whose early experimentation with drugs continues. Gradually this extends and they move onto different drugs that initially give them ‘highs’ than previously experienced.

The problem with following such a path is that the new drugs they try are far more potent than they realize. For example, cannabis we were having in Pakistani streets in early 80s, was quite pure but now a day lot of chemicals has also been added for economical purposes. They are also unaware of how quickly their mind and body accepts them. This acceptance creates a dependence which requires larger, more regular doses just to achieve the same high as previously experienced.

Make no mistake, increasing regularity of use and the amount of drugs consumed is a ‘free entrance ticket’ onto the ever spinning drugs roundabout. ‘Friendly’ dealers will welcome you with open arms. They will be full of ’helpful’ suggestions regarding the colorful selection of illegal substances available. They will also enthuse about the cracking sensations and ‘pleasure’ each one offers. Of course they will neglect to warn you that the selection of ‘goodies’ they have for sale contain devastatingly addictive properties which will quickly have you hooked. If you are aware your drug intake is creeping up in terms of regularity of use, or you are beginning to use ‘just a little bit more’ each time just to achieve that expected high then PLEASE call get help lest its quite late.

Many regular users falsely believe they can stop using their drug(s) of choice as easily as they can turn a tap on and off. If only this were true. What needs to be clearly reinforced is that regular drug use creates a dependency. Your body and your mind take to the drugs you are feeding them like a duck to water, but they do so at a price. This price is that they are not satisfied with simply receiving the same amount at the same regular intervals, they need more of the same and they need it more regularly.

If you are a user that has progressed to this stage you will not be able to quit ’just like that’. To call time on your drug use at this stage requires the inclusion of professional drug rehab services.

Users who know full well they have serious drug dependency issues generally have a standard response to such issues. This response is to deny the truth and then bury such thoughts under their next hit. They will also continue to convince themselves that they are in control of their drugs use. The sad reality is that drugs are firmly in control of them.

If you are to call time on your drug use before it is too late you must admit to yourself things have gone too far. You need to concede that this serious problem needs urgent attention, and you must also overcome a deep-seated fear. This is the fear of how you will possibly survive without your regular supply of drugs. While such fear is completely understandable, it cannot and should not prevent you from seeking urgent drug rehab assistance.

There are several options open to you. These include your health practitioner, registering with a outpatient rehabilitation center, or taking the sensible route that many addicts choose; a stay in a residential rehab establishment.

It is imperative that you call time on your drug use before its potentially fatal effects call time on you. Harsh words indeed, but very true all the same. Whichever drug rehab option and treatment you decide upon must be decided now. You owe this to yourself and to those closest to you. They are going through untold anguish and deep concern over your addiction. The professionals help you kick your habit. It also encourages you to plan for a future that is free from the shackles drug addiction brings with it.

If you are in Pakistan and you or your loved one is struggling with drug addiction, you can contact Nishan Rehab. Nishan is having both residential and non-residential treatment options.

While Some Professions Are Certainly More Stressful Than Others, Is It Possible That The Rigors Of Some Are More Likely To Lead To Addiction? Is Your Job Causing You To Reach For The Bottle Or Drugs? Find Out Which Jobs Are More Likely To Cultivate Addiction And Why.

Written by: Dr. Talat Habib, Director Nishan Rehab Pakistan

Numerous studies over the years have revealed that some jobs are more stressful than others. But what about how this relates to addiction? In 2015, for example, a study revealed that top managers and business owners in Singapore are the most likely to become addicted to substances.

Many of us unwind with a glass of wine, a beer or even some marijuana after a stressful day at work. Still, could certain professions lead people down the slippery road to substance addiction, or does responsibility exist with the individual? Which professions actually have the highest substance abuse and addiction rates? The results may surprise you.

Food and Service Industry Workers

Employees in the food and service industry have the highest rate for the use of substances. A National Survey on Drug Use and Health done in the U.S. by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association’s (SAMHSA) showed that 16.9% of food and service workers in the last year have used illegal substances (followed closely by the construction industry at 14.3%). There are many speculations for this phenomenon, from the late hours worked, cash in-hand from tips, to the generally flexible hours involved in this industry.

Mining and Construction Industry

In a comprehensive study of various industries in the USA, those working in mining and construction had the highest rates of heavy alcohol abuse. While jobs in this sector may not be stressful in the same ways as an office job, great physical demands are often put on employees, including being in potentially dangerous working conditions.

Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports, and Media

People working in the entertainment industry also have a high rate of alcohol and other substance abuse. Often, this sector of the economy relies on performing, so drugs can be used for stimulation or relaxation. There is also research showing that these types of businesses are less likely to conduct random drug testing. In one study, one-third of illicit drug users surveyed said that they would be less likely to work for employers that conduct random drug tests.

Healthcare Professionals

In a survey of the most stressful jobs, a range of different healthcare professions were ranked in the top-20 most stressful jobs. Long hours, being on-call, the amount of responsibility a healthcare employee has, easy access to prescription medications; plus the potential for things to go wrong in an instant can lead workers to reach for drugs, both legal and illegal. The American Nurses Association (ANA) says approximately 10% of nurses are dependent on drugs, while it is estimated that between 10-15% of all healthcare professionals are addicted to alcohol or other drugs.

Managers, Bankers and High Level Executives

This sector of job positions is commonly thought of when considering ‘high functioning addicts. These are professionals who are able to hide their alcohol or drug abuse and continue working and functioning in life normally. A celluloid example would be the 2013 movie, “The Wolf on Wall Street,” which shows the character played by Leonardo Dicaprio do a phenomenal amount of drugs and alcohol while rising to the top of his industry.

A Singapore Mental Health Study in 2009-10 showed that people in senior or top management positions had the highest instance of dual diagnosis, which is having a psychological condition coupled with a substance addiction.

Pilots and Flight Attendants

While these days, due to technology, flying to some people may seem straightforward, the cabin crew actually carries a lot of unseen stress. Flight attendants are frequently fatigued and state long hours, days away from family, as well as rude and drunken passengers as common sources of stress.

Pilots on the other hand, in addition to the stressful job of flying the plane, harbour the weight of knowing that making one wrong move could kill hundreds of people. Along with the pressures of the industry, an increasing number of pilots are turning to alcohol. What is probably most notable is that airline workers are more likely to slip into a habit without themselves or other people even realizing it. Recently a private airline’s flight was almost crashed while landing at Lahore International Airport. Flight was landed off the runway. After investigation, it was found that pilot was under the influence of alcohol. Virtually he has put lives of almost 250 passengers at stake.

Business Owners

The final category with the highest percentage of alcohol use and abuse is that of business owners. Similar to the managers and high level executives, the amount of mental stress for business owners is high. There is also a strong, acceptable, drinking culture of wining and dining prospective business partners. In general, the higher-up the individual is on the business ladder the larger the potential for failure.

While these jobs are the most likely to lead to alcohol or drug abuse, not everyone ends up getting addicted — as genetics also play a huge determining factor in the disease of addiction. Remember that it is important to manage your work stress in healthy ways, such as by exercising. It is also important to monitor your own consumption of alcohol (or other drugs).

It is essential that people are aware of what constitutes responsible drinking, what is addiction, and how to seek help if you or someone has a problem. Nishan Rehab have two facilities in Pakistan, Islamabad and Multan and offers discreet outpatient help for high-functioning individuals suffering from addiction, and our treatment programme can be worked around their demanding schedules.  If you feel like you or someone you know has a problem, make contact today for advice or to book an appointment.

Alcoholism Progression & Recovery

The course of addictive disease, if unblocked is highly predictable. In progression and recovery, the alcoholic’s descent from maintenance drinking to complete loss of control. And we see similar patterns of addiction for cocaine and narcotics dependency. The first stage is adaptive stage in which a person drinks to feel better, relax, stimulated or for any reason. This is first introduction to alcohol. Later in this stage frequency of drinking increases and a user drinks to improve functioning. In this stage later we see mild irritability, nausea, mild shakes, night sweats, etc. Addict may drinks on inappropriate place and time.

After the adaptive stage there comes the second stage dependent stage. Addict may seek help for problems. He tries to quit in this stage but efforts may fail. In this stage the family, work, personal problems may increase.

Now there is another stage in alcoholism which is deteriorative stage. The addict may face colds, flu, infections, severe physical penalty if drinking is stopped. In this stage there are a lots of medical complains such as loss of appetite, blood in urine, digestive problem, stomach pain, yellow eyes and so on. we see loss of control over alcohol intake in this stage.

After this stage, an addict has four options: Recovery, Multiple Relapse, Jail and Death. And the addicts who choose Recovery, they enter in the initial treatment. They come in the treatment because of physical illness or coerced into treatment because of social or behavioral problems. In this stage the patient is detoxified. Patient may feel angry, guilty, depressed over his/her situation.

Now re-education begins. Patients learn about the Alcoholism and how to treat it. Addict begins to take personal responsibility by changing thinking and behavior. Patient will experience anger, guilt and depression.

In recovery, we see the patient working in group, becomes hopeful and willing to go to any lengths for sobriety. He helps fellow patients in this stage. Here at Nishan Rehab, we treat alcoholism. If you or your loved one is suffering from Alcoholism, do not hesitate to contact us.

Crimes Committed due to the Use of Alcohol and Drugs

By Sarfaraz Haider

Drugs and alcohol can be so destructive – (Kyan Douglas). There is a serious and hazardous relationship between alcohol, drugs and crime across the world. The use of alcohol and drugs can harmfully affect all the aspects of a person’s personal life, family life, social life, occupational life and spiritual life. Alcohol and drugs are occupied in offenses leading to detention. Such as household aggression, driving when drunk, land offenses, drug offenses, and public-order offenses.Alcohol Addiction is rooted to violent crimes, murder, rape, physical abuse, child and spousal abuse more than any illegal drugs .Alcohol is often a factor in violence where the enemy and the casualty know each other. Directly or indirectly, alcohol and drugs influence  every one of us, in our homes, in our families, in our school,  or in our community as well.

The relationship between drugs and crime is composite, and one question is whether drug use leads people into illegal activity or whether those who use drugs were are already predisposed to such activity. Many unlawful drug users commit no other kinds of crimes, and several who commit crimes do not use illegal drugs. However,in the severe state of addiction and drugs, it is highly likely that drugs and crime are interconnected with each other.drug-crime

There are basically three types of crimes associated with drugs:

  • The crimes that result from or involve individuals who use drugs, and who do crimes as a consequence of the effect the drug has on them. Their actions , reactions, responses and mental  processes, i.e thinking, reasoning, problem solving and decision making are all affected negatively.
  • Crimes where an individual has to do crimes in order to support a drug habit. These may include economically related activities like robbery, drug dealing and prostitution. Drug addicts are also more likely to be arrested for crimes such as shop theft and stolen goods etc
  • Crimes that consequence from the formation of the drug system. They include production, manufacture, transportation, and sale of drugs, as well as violence related to the production or trade of drugs, such as a territory war.

Causes mentioned above create further problems

  • The sex business easily exploit women, men and children who are involved in drug use. Due to crimes caused by drug addiction, family’s face different kinds of illegal complications like jail and court related issues. Many of whom are caught up in the criminal justice system. However, there is evidence that drug use is both a pre-determining factor in such sexual abuse and a means of coping with it.
  • Though there is no “root” of abuse and no specific profile of abusers, many factors contribute and make abuse more likely to occur. Due to drug crime there are pressures on the family. Individuals face decrease social support and social network. Social isolation can all lead to parental anxiety and increase the chances that a parent will strike out at their child.

Other sociological factors are also important in understanding why someone turns to drugs or alcohol or engage in criminal behaviors. These include living conditions, family, employment, marital status and mental hea

Focus on the Solution

  • Treatment always works and people can feel better from addiction, maintaining self-denial from alcohol and drugs. Healing offers the best substitute for interrupting the illegal justice cycle for offenders with drug and alcohol problems & decease the criminal behavior. Prison should be a place where people can get the help they need.
  • Treatment also saves money. many researches showed that substance abuse treatment saved more money than expenses of substance use in terms of fewer arrests, incarcerate, food stamp use, and less child welfare and medical costs because, criminal behavior decreases as alcohol and drug use decrease, and saving can be use for the benefit and welfare of family .Recovery is possible.

Overcoming Negativity in Addiction Recovery

By Maryam Malik

Many of us have tried to fight substance abuse by simply deciding not to drink alcohol or throwing away the drugs. Our lives would be much better if only we could quit that easily. But it is so hard to quit the behaviors even after knowing they are harming us.

Addiction isn’t just about the behaviors you engage in. Rather, it’s a complex disease through which the brain’s decision-making processes lead you to act against your own best interests.

By learning how to change problematic thought patterns, we can take back control of our life and overcome addiction! One of the most important steps we can take on our recovery journey is learning how to become a positive thinker.

Make a Conscious Effort to Only Think Positive Thoughts

Positive people don’t live in a magical world full of rainbows and unicorns. Bad things happen to everybody, and we all spend a large portion of our time thinking about life’s challenges.freedom

The difference between positive and negative thinker isn’t what we think about, it’s whether we choose to ruminate over our troubles or respond productively to them. For negative thinkers, every problem in life can feel like a massive boulder cutting off their path through life. But for positive thinkers, life’s struggles become an opportunity to climb over that boulder and continue on their path. The most common types of negative thought patterns are:

  • All-or-nothing thinking—Assuming that anything less than perfection is a complete failure.
  • Disqualifying the positives—Focusing on the negative aspects of an experience, but fail to acknowledge that these negative aspects are frequently intermingled with positive ones.
  • Negative self-labeling—Reacting to negative circumstances by making negative judgments about yourself.
  • Catastrophizing—Assuming that actions will result in the worst-case scenario.

When we take a step back and look at these thought processes, we can tell they’re unhelpful and irrational ways to approach problems. If a friend expressed one of these negative thought patterns, we would probably point out the ways in which their thought process was flawed — yet, we often don’t think to step back and correct our own faulty thought patterns.

Nishan Rehab not just focuses on quitting drugs rather help patients to confront problems with positivity. While we might have to cut old friends out of our life as we recover from addiction, our recovery process shouldn’t be a lonely time in our life. It’s important to have the right kind of social support when we are undertaking a life challenge such as overcoming addiction. Making a conscious effort to spend time around positive people can help our brains develop positive thought patterns. These thought patterns help us believe we can overcome the challenges we are facing. When our brain absorbs the speech and logic patterns of positive people, we find our self-talk will become more positive as well.

When it comes to overcoming addiction, you don’t have to go it alone. The experienced addiction specialists at Nishan Rehab are here to support you towards a life free of drug or alcohol addiction. Nishan specialists will design a plan just for you that address your specific needs, concerns, challenges, goals and interests.

Hyperactivity And Add Attention Deficit Disorder Psychology

By Yahya Awan

Hyperactivity and A.D.D. Attention Deficit Disorder is a diagnosed and common behavioral disorder that begins early in childhood. Even though considered a childhood disorder once,it is now much more clear that many of the children that have ADHD will continue to have it when they become adolescents. While the symptoms decrease with the progression of age, impairments like social, occupational and familial are observed to increase in adolescence. The disorder has unclear biological underpinnings, it is stressful to live with and places a burden on social, occupational and familial life.adhd

Although A.D.D has a varying array of degrees and types, the effects are roughly the same. The effected have trouble forming and maintaining relationships, they have a hard time concentrating which is a handicare in their occupational life, they are particularly weak in self expression and have communication problems and often face harsh consequences due to acting without thinking.

While it’s causes are variable and not exactly known, they are roughly related with genetics, environmental effects, extraordinary conditions occurring during the development of brain. Psychological or medical treatments are available,of course, and former of which are usually the first choice while the latter is for more intense cases with heavier symptoms.Other treatments include academic, and behavioral interventions.

Hyperactivity and A.D.D. is a common seen case at people, starting from childhood. It is not a disease,it is defined as a behavioral disorder by health experts, while psychiatrists define it as a neurobehavioral developmental disorder.

It should be noted that being Hyperactive does not mean being less qualified, so much that; most hyperactive people have higher IQ rates compared to other people. This means these individuals can be, and are actually as qualified and as intellectually potent as everyone, or even more.

ADHD makes certain things harder for the one’s affected by it, like making it more difficult to focus on things for a long time without distraction. Patients also struggle controlling what they are doing or saying, and also have harder time on controlling the frequency of their physical activities, compared to somebody without ADHD.To say in other words, hyperactive individuals are more impulsive and restless.

There are other disorders that may be related to A.D.H.D. Backing that up,”ADHD is also associated with many other conditions including learning disabilities,  conduct disorder, anxiety, mood, and substance abuse disorders.” States M. Simionescu, from the State University of New York.

Symptoms include:

  • Not paying attention to detail
  • Mistakes due to carelessness
  • Failure to pay and keep attention on task
  • Not listening
  • Inability to follow and understand any instruction
  • Avoiding effort involving tasks
  • To be distracted a lot
  • To forget things a lot
  • Losing objects that are needful to complete the tasks
  • Hyperactive-Impulsive Type symptoms include:
  • Fidgeting
  • Squirming
  • Getting up often when seated
  • Heavy physical activity (running, climbing) in inappropriate times
  • Having trouble playing or tasking quietly
  • Talking excessively and impatiently
  • Interrupting

For a certain diagnosis, symptoms must be observed for a consistent six months, and to a greater degree than other children at the same age.adult-adhd

Results at Real Life

Most people display some of these symptoms and behaviours, but it is not always to a degree where they interfere with their lives significantly. And due to this absence of significance, diagnosis are often inaccurate. Some people with ADHD experience considerable difficulties with social and academic skills, such as forming or keeping relationships or performing adequately at work. Moreover, most children with A.D.H.D experience rejection and exclusion by their peers, compared to the 10-15 percent of healthy children of the same age. A significant rate of adolescents are observed to have difficulties during the process of nonverbal and verbal communication.

  • Studies show that, in about 75 percent of the cases, genetics are a factor and the disorder is also highly heritable between ancestral genes.

Executive Functions

  • Significant amount of symptoms arise from a primary deficit on ‘Executive Functions’, which refers to cognitive processes that regulate and control other cognitive processes. The most obvious examples of this are planning, working memory, attention, inhibition and mental flexibility.

  • For more than 1 percent of population, researchers stated that high generality of ADHD may be due to natural selection, probably because the individual traits might be beneficial on their own and only became dysfunctional where these traits combine to form ADHD.

  • Environmental factors usually contribute a small role to the origins of ADHD.Exposure to tobacco smoke or alcohol intakes during the pregnancy may impair the development of nervous system which can end up with a diagnosis of ADHD.  This is why it is important to quit drugs and go into Rehab especially if you are about to become a mother. Nihan Rehab excels in addiction treatment. Environmental lead also remains as a valid factor, since former studies at relatively high levels of lead exposure showed that the exposure and low levels of IQ as well as attention problems, other disorders such as autism or hyperactivity.

We at Nishan believe, As a common case, hyperactivity has many effects on patients who bear it,  though it does not pose any serious threats or problems on health. It makes life harder, in a social and academic/occupational sense, but that does not mean that it is completely bad and hard to live with it. The majority of hyperactive individuals are reported and observed to have higher IQ levels and creativeness compared to those who aren’t. They also think and act differently, and outstand in a general crowd, in a good sense.

However, this disorder can be treated and reduced, even though it can not be completely removed, but then again, since it does not have harmful effects on human health, it is not necessary. But then, having a more stable mind and physical stand and posture may help individuals to have a more successful social and occupational life. At Nishan, we treat this disorder by teaching our clients how to manage this disorder. Through extensive therapy and the right medication we believe any client can live their life normally just like others.

One should not simply stereotype or confuse hyperactive individuals with mental patients. It can be both a blessing, and a curse, depends on the perspective. After all, they are just humans like us, maybe a little more restless, reckless and impatient. But again, there is nothing wrong with standing out of the crowd, in a good way, and without even trying as hard as everyone else!
